Addleshaw Goddard’s most precious asset is their good name but unfortunately due to their Leeds based legal team they are seriously on the threshold of losing it. This is partly due to the intransigence of the top four partners who seem to think that profit is more important than one’s good name.
Managing Partner, Andrew Johnston recently stated “Thank you to everyone at AG for the hard work, dedication and expertise that define our firm”. Clearly he wasn’t aware at that juncture just how extraordinarily steep their fall from grace was going to be. It is probably the first time in his law firm’s illustrious history that an 85 year litigant in person has absolutely trounced them in court. It was also particularly galling for their client, publically quoted company Daniel Thwaites Plc because its directors and main shareholders the Yerburgh family could never have imagined in their worst nightmares that such an eminent law firm would lose so spectacularly in the said circumstances.
In August 2023 Addleshaw Goddard agreed to represent Daniel Thwaites Plc the claimant against Web4orce Limited the defendant, that is a one man company which was represented by their only employee John Duggan an 84 year old litigant in person. For the simple reason they could not afford the extortionate costs incurred retaining a law firm.
At the outset the claimant’s main witness Richard Bailey lied a couple of times on oath in his first statement of truth. The defendant’s only witness John Duggan challenged both lies in his first statement of truth and the claimant’s main witness in his second statement of truth admitted he lied once but took great exception to the second allegation.
From that point on things went downhill for the claimant and when it eventually went to trial in November 2024 the claim was dismissed. However that wasn’t the only bad news for the claimant as it later transpired their law firm, Addleshaw Goddard had incriminated themselves in pre-trial events and what’s even worse their lawyers were also in abuse of process on more than one occasion.

Cons - The upper management is a clique, they do not care the least bit about their trainees or associates. They could not care any less for encouraging and advancing.
